Immigration & Society is an introductory-level course open to all undergraduate students at Rutgers University. Developed migration expert and Rutgers sociologist, the course exposes students to the vast sociological theories and research on international migration and immigration in the United States. Immigration is and always has been a controversial topic in the United States and much of Europe. And while politicians often use immigration to mobilize their political bases, both policymakers and the public tend to misunderstand the causes and consequences of immigration. In this class, we move beyond news headlines and political talking-points. The purpose of this course is to provide a coherent and comparative overview of social science research and scholarship on immigration. The course draws on sociology as well as related disciplines (Economic, Political Science, Anthropology) to present a rich and stimulating excursion into the academic world of migration studies. The course also includes lectures on immigration in other countries so that students can compare how immigration in the United States varies relative to other countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Germany, among others.
